⛪️ Church of the Holy Spirit, Rye Harbour

Standing next to a modern playground in a field on the harbour road is a gothic church built in 1849 - thanks to locals, Mr & Mrs William Lucas Shadwell. The church was designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon and made with local blue stone and Caen stone. The church benefited from further adornments, namely;

+ An extension in 1912 thanks to a Mr C Spooner which provided an ‘arts and crafts’ style chancel and the roof as an upturned boat 🚤.

+ The pulpit was bought after WWII from West Sussex.

+ In 2000 a triptych designed by a local artist was installed behind the altar.

+ There is also a substantial memorial to the 17 lives lost in the 1928 Mary Stanford Lifeboat incident in the grounds.

The church continues to serve approximately 400 local residents and visitors to Rye Harbour and Rye Nature Reserve.
