St Peter & St Paul

This weekend I came across β€˜the church of St Peter & St Paul’ at Peasmarsh whilst out walking with Ivy πŸ• and the family πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§

This church dates back to around 1070 with many features still in situ. However, it is likely there was a Saxon church on this site previously, although this cannot be proved.

There is a charter that exists in which Count Henry of Eu records that his grandfather, Count Robert, gave him the church of Peasmarsh soon after the Norman Conquest.

Features of the original Norman church are that of the West Wall of the Nave, the East Wall of the Nave and the Chancel Arch. Whilst not dating back from exactly that period there is a Piscina (stone basin) in the South Wall which dates from 1240 along with the Sedilla (stone seats). There is also a tryptych featuring the Ten Commandments, the Creed and the Lords Prayer over the Chancel Arch which appear to be original, dating them to the reign of Elizabeth I. πŸ‘‘

The church appears to be relatively active for the residents of Peasmarsh and the surrounding villages and whilst a late Saturday afternoon, we saw 3 visitors to the graves and 2 church wardens.
